EAST INDIES 1943-1944
SABANG 1944
HMS RELENTLESS was an ‘R’ Class destroyer built during the Second World War. For the majority of the war years, she served in the East Indies and Far East and when WW2 ended, she returned home and was placed in Reserve.
Needing a quick-fix deterrent to the submarine technology of the Eastern Bloc, RELENTLESS was converted into a Type 15 antisubmarine frigate in 1951. However, with the advent of the built-for-purpose Type 12 and Leander Class anti-submarine frigates, RELENTLESS’ stop-gap service came to a close and she was scrapped in 1971.
In the documents below, you will find information about the ship, her movements during WW2, and extracts from the Ship’s Logs from the 1950s and 1960s.
You will also find a wealth of other information about RELENTLESS: incidents from WW2, the 1945 Mutiny, and the 1954 collision with HMS VIGILANT. What was a Bahamas, or a Beira Patrol like, and why did we do them?
Lots of information and personal recollections on life aboard RELENTLESS.
